Course Description

 

Welcome to the first year of the choral program at Anderson Shiro Junior High! This will be a fabulous year of discovery and learning.

 

Goals:

* Learn about many different types of music literature appropriate for middle school singers

* Learn to sight read choral music at the beginning through intermediate levels

* Learn about correct singing techniques

* Learn to demonstrate correct singing skills through performances in the school and community

* Learn about Arts and Humanities topics integrated through the choral curriculum

 

GRADING GUIDELINES:

Grading guidelines for each grade level or course will be communicated and distributed to students and their parents by the classroom teacher. These guidelines have been reviewed by each applicable curriculum department and have been approved by the campus principal. These guidelines establish the minimum number of assignments, projects, and examinations required for each grading period. In addition, these guidelines establish how the student’s mastery of concepts and achievement will be communicated (e.g., letter grades, numerical averages, checklist of required skills, etc.). Grading guidelines also outline in what circumstances a student will be allowed to redo an assignment or retake an examination for which the student originally made a failing grade. Procedures for a student to follow after an absence will also be addressed.

Nine weeks grades will be calculated with 60% comprised of Academic Achievement grades and 40% of Academic Practice grades.
 
 
Academic Achievement may include, but are not limited to tests (including 9 week cumulative and unit tests), presentations (e.g., speeches, oral reports, etc.), book reports, compositions, portfolios, research projects, special projects such as science fair projects, etc.
 
Academic Practice grades may include, but are not limited to class work/homework, notebooks, journals, lab reports, oral assessments, quizzes, portfolio, technology activities, etc. Semester grades are calculated with the two nine weeks grades counting as 6/7 and the semester exam grade counting 1/7 of the semester average.

Honor Classes:

Students who wish to enroll in Anderson-Shiro Jr/Sr High School Honors or Pre-AP classes must meet certain criteria. Criteria may include class rank in the top 25%, previous year’s average in that subject, prior year state assessment score if applicable and teacher recommendation.

Students that are enrolled in any Anderson-Shiro Jr/Sr High School Honors or Pre-AP class must meet certain grade criteria to remain enrolled in the class. A student must have an 80 or better grade average in the class to remain in good standing. Student grades will be evaluated every 3 weeks (progress report and report card status). If a student’s grade is below 80 at either the 3 weeks or 6 weeks grade check, the student will be placed on probation for the next 3 weeks. At the next 3 week interval, grades will be checked again. If the grade is then above 80, the student will be in good standing. If the grade is still below 80, the student may be dropped from the Honors/Pre-AP class and placed in a regular class at administrator discretion.

 

A thorough syllabus will be handed out the first day of class with specific grading policies, classroom expectations, etc., along with the teacher’s contact information and class schedule.
