ASHS Students Participate in "Country Girls Can Code"

Last Saturday, students from Anderson-Shiro High School traveled to Austin, Texas to participate in a day of developing computer programming skills called, “Country Girls Can Code” sponsored by Techs4Tex, a small, non-profit organization. The purpose of the event was to give high school girls from rural communities an opportunity to explore computer programming and build capacity for computer science careers. Forty-nine girls from eight school districts in rural areas between Austin and Houston worked alongside ten female mentors currently working in Austin in technology careers, led by Trisha Katz, Senior Software Engineer at Outdoor Voices, and Jessica Tremblay, Senior Visual Designer and Front End Developer for IBM Storage.
It was a fast paced day, located at Mutual Mobile headquarters in downtown Austin. The girls enjoyed listening to the mentors speak on topics such as the variety of career opportunities available, and the need for more females in the industry. After introductions and a talk, girls received Chromebooks to use for the day, provided by GTS Technology Solutions, so that they could learn the basics of HTML, CSS and design thinking. Using meeting rooms at Mutual Mobile, with a view of the state capitol, gave the girls an opportunity to get an insider’s view of a tech company’s workplace. They worked on their individual websites using CodePen, a popular online site for building and showcasing content.
The day concluded with the girls showing what they had built during the day- websites with photos, animations, text, and video. Each girl and mentor received a Country Girls Can Code T shirt, provided by Inventive Group. Overnight accomodations for groups traveling over two hours, lunch, with cake provided by Kountry Boys, snacks, and swag bags were also included in this free event hosted by Techs4Tex Foundation. Local funding was provided by Citizens State Bank in Brenham.
The girls were excited to attend, but even more excited to open the door to new opportunities and choices for their future!
